What is neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is a form of biofeedback in which brain waves that are desirable are rewarded. It was discovered in the late 1960s. It is a form of operant conditioning in which the brain learns to repeat what it is rewarded.

What is biofeedback?

Biofeedback has been around since the early 1970s and is a system where we learn about our bodily responses such as breathing, muscle tension and heart rate and we learn to control them to improve our well-being.

How long will training take?

No single training time is predictable for everyone. Depending on the nature and severity of the condition, the training time will vary. This process is similar to skill development in other functional areas. Positive changes are experienced quickly. However, the training time is dependent on the severity of the condition, the noticeable improvements experienced by the client and the objective changes in the neurofeedback readings of the sessions.

How do I know it works?

You will begin to experience positive feelings and reactions from the first sessions. However, since the brain is made of millions of neurons, it may take multiple sessions before enough changes begin for the individual to realize the positive changes.

How long is a session?

Generally the sessions are 45 minutes to an hour long.

What is a typical session like?

The clinician will place electrodes on the individual’s head with a preset treatment plan. The person will watch a screen (video game) and the changes in their brain waves are displayed in a game format. Points will build up and the images will change for the positive as they produce the desired waves. The clinician will adjust the program for maximum reward benefits with the desired waves.

When does an individual feel the effect?

Sometimes individuals will begin to feel better in the session, sometimes after they leave and sometimes the next day, when the brain has a chance to consolidate the information.

How long do the changes last?

At first, the positive effects will last for a day or so, gradually they last longer, and the treatments can be spaced out more as the brain learns the new patterns.

Blog Post: Anxiety and Depression
Ended by Neurofeedback

Alan, not his real name, a high school student from Lawrenceville, began neurofeedback as a troubled and depressed student. At that time, thoughts of self-harm were disturbing him. Moodiness and withdrawal from the family were a concern to his mother. He lost interest in many activities, friends, and family, while experiencing difficulty with communicating his feelings.
